Since his arrival in Canada in 2020, Uchenna Okereafor has been a force within the Edmonton Igbo community, leaving an indelible mark through his volunteerism and commitment to cultural preservation and community empowerment.
Using his experience and knowledge as an educator and through his role as Director, Vice-President and President of the Igbo Cultural Association of Edmonton (ICAE), Uchenna has played an instrumental role in the development of the Edmonton Igbo School. Here, students are able to connect with their culture and language in an environment that fosters a sense of belonging and pride in their Igbo ancestry.
Uchenna contributes countless hours to his work in the community through the ICAE. As President, Uchenna has employed a visionary approach: identifying and leveraging the unique talents of ICAE members by assigning them to specialized committees based on their expertise, helping to ensure effective collaboration, impactful outcomes and organizational sustainability.
Uchenna takes immense pride in his heritage and has worked tirelessly on behalf of the Black community, taking his place on the frontlines to eliminate racial barriers as he advocates for inclusivity and celebration of Edmonton’s expansive and diverse ethnocultural landscape. His success is seen in the strength of the Igbo community and for this the Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition Program honours Uchenna Okereafor.
