Recognizing that some of his fellow South Asian immigrants were experiencing difficulties adapting to their new homeland in Canada, Sunil Phool stepped forward to make the final leg of a difficult journey a little easier.
Sunil noted that a barrier to those attempting to integrate and adapt to life was the fact that many subjects openly discussed in Canada have been considered taboo in India. Among these topics are mental health, diversity, equity, inclusion, gender and 2SLGBTQQIA+ rights. Determined to join the effort to promote and celebrate Alberta’s diverse communities, Sunil started his own non-profit – providing a safe and welcoming space for discussion. Sunil hosts podcasts, panel discussions and a celebration each year of inclusion event that includes professionals and individuals with lived experience from the community.
Sunil also strives to meet the more basic needs of those within the South Asian community and beyond by running a weekly food hamper program. Through the program, more than 100 low-income families and students are provided with resources to help combat food insecurity.
For helping to make Edmonton a more inclusive, stronger community, Sunil Phool is deserving of Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition.
