Shafaq Batool is the visionary behind Khairiyat: Women’s Health Equity Network. This volunteer-run health network is dedicated to supporting newcomers and racialized communities in southern Alberta.
In collaboration with the YMCA Youth Achievement Program and other local organizations, Khairiyat leads interactive educational workshops that help newcomer youth understand boundaries, consent and the realities of sexual assault.
Through interactive workshops and accessible resources, Shafaq’s team educates and empowers youth, building resilience and safety for the next generation. To date, Shafaq’s workshops have reached more than 50 youth in Calgary, supported by a dedicated team of 11 volunteers developing and delivering content. Its program website offers accessible resources for children and parents, extending the impact beyond the classroom.
Shafaq’s initiative is a powerful example of grassroots leadership meeting urgent community needs. For her passion and leadership, Shafaq is deserving of Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition.
