Rose Koll

Location: Grande Prairie, Alberta

While at first glance rather unassuming, wolverines have a reputation for determination in the face of a challenge. Rose Koll certainly fits the bill as that same determination has become a hallmark of the leadership she has shown as a member of Grande Prairie’s Wolverines Adapted Sports Association.

The Wolverines have provided up to 9 unique inclusive social-recreational and athletic sports programs and since becoming involved in the non-profit, Rose has demonstrated not only her compassion, but her leadership as a general member of the board for over ten years. Succession planning is a vital, but often overlooked, element to ensure an organization’s sustainability. Rose has been thinking ahead and takes the lead in encouraging other volunteers to participate in Board Development workshops and shared valuable input to the Board as it restructured, ensuring that members will continue to be available to support those with disabilities.

Playing the game may seem a lot more fun than writing the rule book, but ensuring an organization runs smoothly means having the right policies and procedures in place. Throughout the lengthy legislation process, Rose guided the development of the new Bylaws and Policy and Procedures manual. Rose read every word, offering suggestions for improvement, making sure that bylaws and policies relating to human resources and finance made sense, and that the athletes were represented fairly. And when pandemic public health directives put a hold on fundraising events, Rose took on the task of seeking out funding opportunities, putting in the time to write numerous grant applications.

With the same tenacity of a wolverine overcoming obstacles, Rose Koll has shown her passion for community service burns as bright as the Northern Lights in the Grande Prairie sky.
