Northern Lights recipient - Josephine Michaluk

Location: Penhold, Alberta

Penhold resident Josephine Michaluk has never hesitated to give back to the community, particularly when it comes to giving the gift of life.

A dedicated blood donor since 1965, Josephine set the world’s record for blood donations in September 2022 with 203 units, a feat duly noted in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records.’ Josephine has continued to add to the total, donating her 209th unit of blood just days before celebrating her 81st birthday.

Inspired by Josephine’s commitment and compassion, the Town of Penhold joined forces with Canadian Blood Services (CBS) in February 2024 for the Penhold Cares Central Alberta Community Blood Drive Challenge – in honour of the community’s world record holder. With other local municipalities accepting the challenge, the successful effort allowed CBS to collect 1,055 units of blood. Equally impressive is the 99 donors who were inspired to contribute for the very first time.

Josephine’s contributions to the community go beyond helping to ensure the supply of life-saving blood. Her years of volunteer service include support of the area’s victim services unit and the local chapter of the Order of the Royal Purple service club. Josephine has also stepped up to volunteer at area senior’s residences, helped with community events and continued to use her crafting skills to help those less fortunate, knitting warm caps for those experiencing homelessness.

For her years of service to the community and for unselfishly giving the most precious gift there is to give, Josephine Michaluk is a world-class recipient of Northern Lights Recognition honours.
