In Cochrane and across Rocky View County, a dedicated team of food rescue volunteers is quietly transforming lives and the environment.
As part of the Helping Hands Charity, Cochrane’s network of 115 volunteers across 4 programs are the driving force behind a mission to reduce food waste and nourish the community.
Each day, Helping Hands Food Rescue volunteers collect excess food that would otherwise go to waste. In 2024 alone, its volunteers logged 3,495 hours. In the first half of 2025, they had already contributed 1,688 hours!
With more than $2.3 million in surplus grocery store food redistributed since the program began, its unwavering commitment helps promote sustainability and community resilience in its region. For its positive impact and immense generosity, Helping Hands Cochrane is celebrated with Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition.
