It is difficult to measure the impact that Delbert Lubeck’s volunteerism has had on residents of Grande Prairie and across Northwest Alberta.
Perhaps one measure is the number of women and children who have escaped violence and found safety at the PACE Community Support, Sexual Assault and Trauma Centre. At a time when few men participated in projects to deal with violence against women and children, Delbert stepped forward to support PACE. For more than 20 years, Delbert has volunteered his time with the centre. He has lent his experience in a range of roles: from participating in fundraising efforts, to serving as Board Director and now to leading change in his current role as Board President.
Recognizing the need for similar programming in the region, Delbert shared his experience and knowledge as a mentor including as a mentor to the president with the then Crossroads Women’s Shelter, now the Crossroads Resource Centre, in Fairview.
Delbert has been a tireless advocate for services for children in crisis and was one of the earliest supporters of the Caribou Child and Youth Centre, which was at the time one of 2 advocacy centres in the province and one of 3 advocacy centres in all of Canada. The centre supports youth 18 years and younger who have experienced sexual, physical or psychological abuse, exploitation and neglect or who have witnessed violence or trauma.
As the current president of the Caribou Board of Directors, Delbert also championed efforts to establish a similar organization, the Bison Child Advocacy Centre in High Level, the northernmost-based advocacy centre in the province.
Additionally, Delbert has served his community as a volunteer fireman, as a volunteer with the local Canada Winter Games Committee and as mentor to small business entrepreneurs. For these reasons, Delbert Lubeck has been nominated as a Northern Light Volunteer Recognition recipient.
