Northern Lights recipient Akshay Saxena

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Akshay Saxena is a dedicated community volunteer whose tireless efforts have made a significant impact across Calgary and beyond. He embodies the true spirit of philanthropy by dedicating hundreds of hours each year to a wide range of causes from health and wellness advocacy – including regular blood and plasma donation and organizing mental health seminars – to leading food drives and volunteering at local centres. Akshay has even put his own feet to the pedals in the 200 km Ride to Conquer Cancer to raise funds for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Beyond physical health, he also organizes mental health through seminars and suicide prevention events like “Buddy Up”. Akshay’s volunteer efforts help to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, promote social dialogue and encourage individuals to seek help.

Akshay also champions environmental sustainability through tree-planting and clean-up campaigns, empowers youth through Planet Youth’s backpack initiative, and fosters dogs for BARCS Rescue.

In February 2025, Akshay was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his exceptional volunteerism. His compassion and commitment inspire others to serve humanity, the planet and all living beings. For his empathy and community action, Akshay is celebrated with Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition.
