Overview

An Alberta.ca Account for personal use allows an individual to interact with online services. Some of these services may require your account to be verified by confirming your identity.

Create an Alberta.ca Account

Before you start

  • You need a personal email (not shared with anyone).
  • Depending on the service you are accessing, you need your Alberta Driver’s Licence or Alberta Identification Card.

How to create your account

Go to the Create account page, fill in the form, agree to the Terms of Use and click the submit button.

Read the Alberta.ca Account Reference Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Verify your account

You may be prompted to verify your account when accessing certain services that require proof of your Alberta residency or identity. This is not required by all services.

How to verify your account

To verify your account, you will need a current and valid identification (non-expired):

  • Alberta Driver’s Licence, or
  • Alberta Identification card

Your ID must have your current address. You can use your mobile phone to verify your account via text message (data rates may apply).

To verify your account:

  1. Sign in to your Alberta.ca Account.
  2. Click on “Verify your account”.
  3. You can choose to have an activation code delivered to you either through text message or mailed to you. Note, text message is the quicker option.
  4. Once you have received your activation code, enter it to finish verifying your account

Your account will remain verified as long as the ID used in this process is valid and has not expired. If your ID expires or you update it at a registry office, you must sign in and provide us with your new ID information to maintain your verification status.

Activation code options

You have a couple of options to send an activation code, depending on your type of identification.

  • Activation code sent by text message to your mobile phone

This account verification method is only available if you provided your cell phone number at an Alberta Registry.

    1. During the verification process, you will be asked to pick an activation code option.
    2. Once you select your phone number from the options, you will receive an activation code on your mobile phone via text message.
    3. Follow the prompt on the next page and enter the activation code to complete your account verification.

Confirm if your phone number is registered

You can check if your phone number is registered by starting the verification process and submitting your Alberta Driver’s Licence number or identification information. If you do have a cell phone number registered, it will show on the activation code options page.

How to register your phone number

If your phone number does not appear on the activation options page, add it by visiting an Alberta Registry. This step must be done in person. Your verification progress will be saved.

  • Activation code by mail delivery

It can take up to 10 days to receive your activation code by mail.

When you get the activation code letter, sign in to your account to complete the verification process.

If you have not received your activation code letter

If you have not received your letter within 10 days, you can then request to be sent a new one or use the text messaging option if your phone is registered with us.

If your registered address is not correct

If your mailing address on your ID is wrong, or you cannot receive mail at your registered address, you must visit an Alberta Registry to update your address.

We recommend you add your mobile number at the same time to enable the text message option.

Once you receive your new ID, sign in to your Alberta.ca Account and add the new address information.

Manage your account

Here are some tips to manage your Alberta.ca Account.

Sign in to your Alberta.ca Account

  • Update your verified account information

Your Alberta Driver’s Licence or Alberta Identification card information, such as name, address and date of birth, cannot be changed online. This information must be updated at an Alberta Registry and you will get a new card.

All other information, including email address and password, can be changed online. Changing this information will not affect your verified account status.

    Verified account status

    • Your verification status is linked to the expiry date of the proof of identity used in the verification process.
    • When your ID has expired or becomes invalid, you will have up to 6 months from expiry to provide us with your new ID information.
    • If your ID has expired and you sign in to your account, you only have 30 days to provide us with your new information.

    Keep your account verified

If you do not update your proof of identity information your account will lose its verified status and you will not be able to access certain online services, such as MyHealth Records.

You will need to go through the full verification process again to regain your status.

Update your Alberta Driver’s Licence or Alberta Identification

You have to visit a registry agent to update the information on your Alberta Driver’s Licence or Alberta Identification card.

Once you receive your new card in the mail, you need to sign in to your Alberta.ca Account and enter your updated information.

  • Update your basic account information

All the information on your basic account can be changed online. You can also verify your account on the My Account page.

  • Updates to your Alberta.ca Account do not change other services

Updating your Alberta.ca Account will not change your information on other services automatically. You will need to sign in to each service to update your details to keep everything current.
