Experienced farmers who plan to buy or start a farm in Alberta can apply for permanent residence.
This stream is for entrepreneurs who have the financial resources and farm management experience to establish a new or purchase an existing farm in Alberta.
Candidates must submit their application, along with a proposed business plan, to the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) for assessment. The AAIP will consult with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation to ensure the business plan is feasible and viable, and meets the needs of Alberta’s agriculture industry.
Note: If the AAIP discovers fraud or misrepresentation in an application, a candidate may be banned for up to 5 years from reapplying to the AAIP.
Learn more about eligibility criteria, how to apply, and what to do after you are nominated.
As of October 1, 2020, the AAIP is charging fees for applications and services. Processes for submitting applications and requesting services have changed. Review the Eligibility, How to apply and After you are nominated sections for details.
On April 3, 2023, the AAIP reduced the minimum investment for Rural Entrepreneur Stream from $200,000 to $100,000 to align with investments requirements under other entrepreneur streams.
AAIP also opened the AAIP Phone Line to respond to inquiries about program requirements and processes. The line is operated by AAIP staff and complements existing online information and contact forms offered by the program.
