Red Earth East Complex

The Red Earth East complex is composed of 10 wildfires centered in the northeastern portion of the Slave Lake Forest Area. Some of the wildfires in the complex include:

  • SWF092 near Red Earth Creek and Loon Lake First Nation is classified as out of control and currently 77,988 hectares (ha).
  • SWF100 on the west side of Peerless Lake along Highway 686, is classified as out of control and is currently 17,310 ha.

Firefighters supported by helicopters and heavy equipment are making good progress fighting these wildfires.

Evacuation orders

The following communities remain under and evacuation order:

  • Chipewyan Lake
  • Peerless and Trout Lake

The following communities have began re-entry but remain on a 2-hour evacuation alert.

  • Red Earth Creek
  • Loon River First Nation

Sousa Creek wildfire (HWF036)

The Sousa Creek wildfire is approximately 5 km south of the community of Chateh, 72 km west of the Town of High Level and 27 km east of the Town of Rainbow Lake. This wildfire is classified as out of control and estimated at 53,295 ha in size.

Firefighters, helicopters and heavy equipment are maintaining containment lines on the north-northeast side of the wildfire. Suppression efforts continue on the west and south sides of the wildfire 

Slims Creek wildfire (PWF050)

The Slims Creek wildfire is 30 km north of the town of Manning and estimated to be 20,000 ha in size. Cooler temperatures and rainy conditions have slowed fire growth. Firefighters continue to work on building containment lines with heavy equipment and helicopters.

Highway 35 is open between Hawk Hills and Keg River with speed reductions in place due to decreased visibility with smoke conditions.

Twin Lakes Provincial Recreation Area is in the vicinity of this fire and remains closed at this time.

Blue Sky wildfire (SWF088)

The Blue Sky wildfire is located 22 km north of Marten Beach and is estimated to be 13,684 hectares.

Thanks to hard work of firefighters, aircraft and heavy equipment, the wildfire is now classified as being held. This wildfire will no longer be included in our wildfires of note.

Caribou Lake wildfire (LWF090)

The Caribou Lake wildfire (LWF090) is currently burning out of control and is an estimated 67,813 ha in size.

Firefighters have been making good progress working on containment lines with the support of heavy equipment and helicopters.
