Overview
The Self-employment Program offers eligible Albertans who are looking to develop and start a new business with formal training, business plan development, one-to-one business counselling, coaching and guidance.
The Government of Alberta is working in partnership with the Government of Canada to provide employment support programs and services.
Eligibility
Eligible participants are unemployed and under-employed adults in Alberta, who are permanent residents or Canadian citizens, seeking to start a business for the purpose of self-employment.
Participants must commit to participate in full-time training to start their business and remain connected to the labour market.

If you are interested in participating in a Self-Employment program:
- review the Training and Employment Services Directory
- connect with an organization that delivers this training near you to determine your eligibility
Self-employment Programs are developed by providers, and each program may offer different timeframes, course content and class sizes. All Self-employment Programs provide:
- instructor-led training and supports to develop your business plans
- one-to-one business counselling, coaching and guidance to implement your business
Self-employment training is provided at no cost to eligible Albertans. Financial assistance may be available for eligible participants who require funding to support their living costs while in training, depending on your circumstances.
