Active U.S. tariffs

The U.S. has imposed a series of tariffs on imports of Canadian products. As of August 22, 2026, these active tariffs include:

10% tariffs on most Canadian products that are not CUSMA compliant.

Federal retaliation on U.S. tariffs

On August 25, 2026, the Government of Canada announced new retaliatory tariffs, effective September 8, 2026, in response to recent U.S. tariffs.

Canadian measures cover $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports and include tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% – largely matching the tariffs the U.S. imposes on Canada. Covered products include steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics.

For a detailed list of products covered by the Canadian retaliatory tariffs, see:

The Government of Canada's existing counter tariffs on autos remain in effect.

The Government of Canada’s counter measures also include $7.5 billion in supports for businesses. The funding package is intended to provide businesses with the help they need to diversify their markets, strengthen supply chains and improve their resilience and competitiveness.

Other Canadian Tariff Measures

The Government of Canada has also introduced several additional tariff measures on global imports designed to support the domestic steel industry. These include:

  • 50% tariffs on certain steel imports from:
    • free-trade agreement partners (excluding the U.S. and Mexico) on imports that exceed 75% of 2024 levels
    • all other countries (excluding the U.S. and Mexico) on imports that exceed 20% of 2024 levels
  • 25% tariffs on certain imports from all countries (excluding the U.S.) that contain steel melted and poured in China
  • 25% tariffs on certain steel and aluminum products from China.

Beyond these examples, Alberta industries also contend with a range of other international tariffs and trade restrictions that affect their ability to compete globally. Alberta businesses can visit the Canada Tariff Finder for up-to-date tariff schedules and trade barrier details by market.

CUSMA compliance

In some instances, Canadian exporters can still benefit from duty free access to the U.S. if their goods are CUSMA compliant. Being CUSMA compliant means that goods meet the CUSMA rules of origin and qualify for preferential tariff treatment.
