Overview
We are gathering input on the draft Red Earth Sub-regional Plan along with its regulatory details and its approval as part of the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan. Sub-regional plans help provide opportunities for Albertans to work and play, improve the overall landscape and enable Indigenous traditional uses.
The draft plan shows how Alberta plans to manage land and activity in the area, such as building roads, cutting trees, oil and gas work, recreation and other industry uses.
The Red Earth sub-region is in northern Alberta which spans from the Peace River in the north to the Peavine Metis Settlement in the south, with its eastern boundary following the Utikuma, Liege and Island Rivers and western boundary along the Peace River.
Get informed
The Red Earth sub-region includes boreal forests, wetlands, river systems and agricultural land. Most of the sub-region is located within Alberta’s Green Area with a smaller portion within the White Area.
This sub-region is in the Lower Athabasca, Lower Peace, Upper Athabasca and Upper Peace regions. Proposed amendments to the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan will enable the sub-regional plan and its regulatory details under the Alberta Land Stewardship Act.

Attend a virtual information session to get information about the draft plan and ask questions:

Get involved
Online survey
Complete the online survey by October 26, 2026 to share your input on the draft Red Earth Sub-regional Plan and on the proposed amendments to the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan.
Indigenous engagement
We will work directly with Indigenous communities and organizations throughout the Red Earth Sub-regional Plan area to ensure their perspectives are heard and explored.
Sector engagement
We will meet with interested sectors within the Red Earth Sub-regional Plan area.
We will notify holders of statutory consents that are expressly identified by the proposed plan and regulatory details to provide the opportunity for these individuals to propose alternate means to achieve the policy outcomes of the sub-regional plan.
Outcomes
Feedback will help us finalize the sub-regional plan, including the related regulatory details. It will incorporate the associated regulatory details of the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan to support its full implementation.
