Post-secondary student focus group

Current students and recent graduates are invited to express their interest in sharing their post-secondary experiences.

Overview

We want to hear from current students and people who graduated in 2016 or later about perspectives on post-secondary classroom participation, exposure to different ideas, institutional support and student conduct processes.

Based on a recommendation related to institutional neutrality from the Expert Panel on Post-Secondary Institution Funding and Alberta’s Competitiveness, chaired by Dr. Jack Mintz, we are seeking additional input to inform next steps. 

Before deciding what legislation changes may be needed, we want to learn what is working well, where greater clarity or consistency may be needed and what a fair and effective approach looks like. The student focus group is one part of our engagement on institutional neutrality, freedom of expression and student codes of conduct.

Colleges, universities and other post-secondary institutions should be places where people can explore ideas, ask difficult questions and hear different points of view.

Focus group

Complete the form on this page by September 30, 2026 to tell us you are interested in participating in a focus group that may cover the following topics:

  • Whether you feel able to ask questions, share different viewpoints and participate fully in classroom discussions and academic work.
  • Whether you encounter a range of ideas and perspectives in your courses, programs and campus communities.
  • Your perspectives on your institution’s approach to lawful expression, academic freedom, campus events and different viewpoints.
  • Whether student conduct processes were clear, timely, fair and appropriately supported.

There are no preferred answers. Focus group feedback will be considered alongside feedback from post-secondary institutions, faculty representatives, elected student leaders and other interested groups. You do not need to support or oppose any particular approach to participate.

A focus group will be scheduled between October 1 and October 8, 2026.

Eligibility

You can express interest if you:

  • currently attend a publicly funded post-secondary institution in Alberta, or
  • graduated from a publicly funded post-secondary institution in Alberta in 2016 or later

We want to hear from people with different experiences and perspectives. We are looking for participants from different institutions, programs, years of study and parts of Alberta.

Interest may exceed the number of spaces available. Depending on the number of responses, available capacity and the need to hear from a range of students, not everyone who expresses interest will be invited to participate.

If you are selected, we will email you information about the focus group and how to participate.
