Overview
We have hired an independent contractor to engage with municipalities and other key stakeholders to help us evaluate the police funding model and identify potential changes to ensure it continues to meet the needs of municipalities policed by the RCMP.
We want to assess how well Alberta’s current funding model serves municipalities and explore how other Canadian jurisdictions share provincial policing costs.
Our goal with the engagement is to identify potential changes to ensure the police funding model promotes long-term fairness, shared fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
Stakeholder feedback will help us make important decisions as we move forward with updating the police funding model for 2026 and beyond.
Get informed
Under the Police Act, the Alberta government is responsible for providing adequate and effective policing services in Alberta.
In April 2020, the Police Funding Regulation came into force, and the current funding model was introduced to create a more equitable, transparent and sustainable model for distributing policing costs.
The police funding model takes the total cost of frontline officers and redistributes a portion of those costs to municipalities who receive the services of the RCMP, Alberta’s designated provincial police service.
This funding reinvestment aims to bolster frontline policing, support services and specialized units to enhance police response times, increase officer visibility and address rural crime concerns.

Stakeholder engagement
Our stakeholder engagement will involve discussions with municipalities that receive policing under the Provincial Police Service Agreement, municipalities who receive policing services under municipal police service agreements, the RCMP and other subject matter experts.
From May to June 2025, we will use virtual and in-person sessions with stakeholders including:
- municipally elected officials in communities that fall under the Provincial Police Services Agreement and those under Municipal Police Service Agreements
- municipal administrators
- Alberta Municipalities
- Rural Municipalities of Alberta
- RCMP
Outcomes
Stakeholder feedback will help us create a more sustainable police funding model that balances fairness and fiscal responsibility, while acknowledging the unique aspects of small and rural communities policed by the RCMP as the provincial police service.
