Overview

As part of Alberta’s health system refocusing, an Indigenous Advisory Council is being established to better represent diverse First Nations, Métis, and Inuit community perspectives, bring forward their unique challenges, and give input on how to improve the health care system.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Governance

    The Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services establishes the Indigenous Advisory Council. Members provide advice and recommendations to improve Indigenous health care. The minister appoints council members and designates the chair and vice-chair. 

  • Roles

    The Indigenous Advisory Council will have a province-wide lens and will:

    • bring Indigenous perspectives to inform government and health agencies on health care services, capital and workforce planning
    • bring voice of community and amplify local health needs
    • help shape culturally appropriate care protocols and explore integrating traditional Indigenous practices
    • identify partnerships and providers to ensure seamless care transitions, emphasizing continuity and culturally safe primary care delivery
    • provide advice on goals and measurable outcomes to ensure the programs and services support Indigenous Peoples to meet health and wellness needs

Membership

The Indigenous Advisory Council comprises of up to 22 members, and includes up to:

  • four representatives from Treaty 6, 7 and 8, respectively
  • four Métis representatives
  • one Inuit representative
  • five members from Indigenous Serving groups

The Indigenous Advisory Council members may also be part of a Regional Advisory Council, depending on region.
