Overview
The Government of Alberta (GoA) is responsible for maintaining highways to a safe standard. Highway maintenance services are provided by businesses throughout the province that are contracted by the GoA.
In the winter, nearly 700 snowplows and other snow removal equipment help make the more than 31,400 km of Alberta highways clear and safe for drivers.
Contract maintenance areas
Contractors provide highway maintenance operations in 25 contract maintenance areas (CMAs) of the province, the Deerfoot Trail in Calgary, and the ring roads around Calgary and Edmonton.

Highway maintenance contractors
Contractors are responsible for highway maintenance activities including:
- highway patrolling and emergency duties
- winter maintenance
- line painting and pavement markings
- vegetation control
- asphalt maintenance
- gravel surface maintenance
- roadside maintenance
- bridge maintenance and cleaning
- highway lighting and signals maintenance
