Family justice system engagement

Albertans can share thoughts on how to improve family justice services.

Overview

We want to hear about your experiences with Alberta's family justice system and the Family Justice Strategy. The Family Justice Strategy is Alberta's approach to expanding pre-court services, such as counselling and mediation, to address family law matters through simpler and less adversarial processes.

Your thoughts will help us understand how we can better support you when accessing family justice services. We encourage you to participate even if you have not accessed family justice services through the strategy.

We worked with the courts to create a Family Justice Strategy service delivery model so Albertans, particularly those not using a lawyer, will have consistent processes and access to supports, regardless of the level of court or under which legislation a matter commences.

We held roundtable discussions with legal, clinicial, academic and community experts in October, 2024, to gather their input on the Family Justice Strategy.

Through the Family Justice Strategy, Albertans in Calgary and Edmonton can access pre-court services as a first step to seeking a divorce, or resolving spousal support, parenting or child support. Services include:

  • Forms of dispute resolution such as mediation, where people meet with a neutral mediator to discuss issues including parenting, child support and spousal support.
  • An online Parenting After Separation course for all parents with minor children.
  • Support from a family court counsellor for anyone representing themselves.
  • Access to information by phone, in person and online.
