Data centres in Alberta

Building technological infrastructure responsibly.

Powering Alberta's digital future

Alberta is attracting investment in data centres that support AI, cloud computing and the digital services people use every day. With strong energy resources, a skilled workforce and fibre connectivity, our province is well positioned to support growing demand for digital infrastructure.

Data drives the economy

Data centres are facilities that house computer servers and supporting equipment. They store, processes and transfer the data behind services our economy relies on every day.

Alberta’s opportunity

Demand for AI and digital services is growing rapidly. Alberta offers the energy, infrastructure and workforce needed to support large-scale data centre development while maintaining reliable electricity and responsible growth.

  • Benefits for Albertans

Data centre developers are responsible for the costs of their projects, including land, water, power generation, grid connections and any required infrastructure upgrades.

    Data centre investment can support:

    • construction and long-term jobs
    • municipal tax revenue
    • economic growth and private investment

Large grid-connected facilities may also be subject to Alberta's Data Centre Levy framework.

  • Responsible development

Alberta’s government is not providing subsidies or discounted government power contracts for data centres.

All projects must meet applicable requirements, including:

    • Municipal land-use approvals
    • Environmental reviews
    • Electricity system assessments
    • Safety and regulatory requirements

We are also encouraging large projects to add new electricity generation rather than relying solely on the existing grid.

AI data centres and cryptocurrency mining

Alberta's strategy is focused on AI and digital infrastructure – not cryptocurrency mining. The two are different activities.

AI data centres support AI applications, cloud services, data analytics and high-performance computing.

Cryptocurrency mining uses computers to validate blockchain transactions.
