  • Canmore Area Trails Master Plan: Feedback on Draft Plan

The Government of Alberta is gathering input on Canmore area recreational trails.

The Canmore Area Trails Master Plan (trails plan) is focused on Crown land trails, with consideration for connectivity within private and municipal lands. View a map of the project area.

This survey focuses on gathering your feedback on the draft trails plan, specifically whether the proposed direction, strategies, and actions are suitable and sufficient to achieve and sustain the vision and desired conditions described in the trails plan.

Input received through this survey and the companion interactive mapping exercise will be used to update and improve the final version of the trails plan that is targeted for release in January 2026.

Prior to completing this survey, please review the documents shared on the engagement webpage to gain an understanding of the background, current state, scope of project, and recommendations. It is particularly important to review the draft trails plan as this survey will make direct references to it. We recommend using a large screen device (computer or laptop) to reference the draft trails plan document alongside the survey.

This survey will take 10 to 15 minutes to complete and closes January 21, 2026.

Foundations: Sections 1-2 of the Trails Plan

The purpose of the Canmore Area Trails Master Plan is to “provide the foundation for developing, managing and maintaining an integrated, authorized and sustainable trail system in the Bow Valley that balances ecological values with quality outdoor recreation opportunities.”

Sections 1-2 of the draft trails plan introduces the project and provides a contextual summary of matters related to area trails and future desired conditions. Earlier versions of the content in these sections were the basis for the trails plan 2024 public engagement and feedback received at that time was used to update the content here.

Before moving on to questions about the trail network improvements, implementation and actions (i.e. the ‘what we’re going to do about the situation’), let’s ensure that these sections of the document provide a good overview of the current state, purpose, principles, objectives and planning context and desired conditions.

Please indicate your level of support for sections 1-2 of the trails plan. Does each section provide accurate, suitable, and sufficient contextual information to help readers?

Trail Planning and Design Approach

Section 3 of the draft trails plan describes the trail planning and design approach to be used throughout the entire area on the topics of:

  • Shifting recreation and trail free areas
  • Seasonal closures
  • Trail bundles
  • Community loops
  • Addressing trail experience gaps
  • Expected habitat improvements
  • Approach to designating trails

The following questions invite your feedback on each topic and how it is presented.

Trail Network Improvements

Section 4 of the trails plan outlines the specific direction and actions proposed for each of the area’s planning units, including the intended experiences and activities, temporary/seasonal trail closures, trail decommissioning, parking and amenities.

The following questions provide one of two opportunities to share your thoughts about this section. General feedback on the trails plan’s content is best submitted below. For specific mappable suggestions (e.g., a suggested location for a trail or an amenity such as a toilet) is best submitted on the project’s online mapping platform. A link to this platform will also be shared at the end of this survey.

Please indicate your level of support for the trails plan’s content on each planning unit. Do you support the proposed actions and how they are presented?
If you feel improvements are needed for any planning unit content, please explain why and tell us what could be done to improve it.
