Overview
The Assisted Living Framework strengthens how Albertans move through the health and social services system by expanding community supports, freeing up hospital beds and modernizing how continuing care is funded and delivered. We are supporting this work by:
- expanding home care and non-medical supports so more Albertans can safely age in place instead of relying on emergency departments or hospital admissions
- improving navigation in emergency departments, especially in high-traffic ERs, so people can be connected directly to community supports including shelter, supportive housing and medical respite rather than defaulting to admission
- creating new transition units and standardized Alternate Level of Care (ALC) pathways in hospitals so patients can move more quickly into the right continuing care or assisted living setting
- modernizing funding so taxpayer dollars follow patients, not beds
- making it easier for Albertans and their families to find and choose the care option that works best for them through an assisted living navigation portal
- investing billions of dollars over the next 10 years to build and renew continuing care spaces across Alberta, starting with an immediate investment of $400 million for new and upgraded units
- strengthening data, standards and workforce supports so Assisted Living Alberta and its partners can operate as one integrated health system focused on outcomes for Albertans, not bureaucracy
Pillars
The Assisted Living Framework drives immediate results and lasting improvements through 4 key pillars.
Support aging in place
Expands home care and non-medical supports to help Albertans age well in their homes and communities.
Connect patients to the right care
Strengthens pathways out of hospital and into community for non-acute patients through improved diversion and discharge planning.
Modernize funding and foster innovation
Aligns funding to prioritize patient outcomes and ensures dollars follow patients, not beds.
Build for the future
Drives the largest continuing care expansion in the province’s history, building capacity to meet the needs of Alberta today and into the future.
Assisted Living Alberta
Assisted Living Alberta (ALA) supports older adults, people with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness and vulnerable Albertans in accessing care when and where they need it.
ALA is part of the transformation of Alberta’s health care system and is the fourth provincial health agency, alongside Recovery Alberta, Acute Care Alberta and Primary Care Alberta.
