Aquatic invasive species annual watercraft pass engagement

Albertans shared feedback to help inform a potential annual watercraft pass.

Overview

We collected input on a potential annual watercraft pass that could support prevention efforts against aquatic invasive species, such as mussels, from entering Alberta's water bodies, ecosystems and infrastructure.

Invasive mussels destroy ecosystems, threaten shorelines and can cause hundreds of millions in damaged infrastructure. An annual pass could potentially support funding for prevention, monitoring and education on aquatic invasive species, as well as policy and legislation, inspection stations, decontamination and the K9 response program.

Alberta's Provincial Aquatic Invasive Species Task Force was established in 2024 and provided recommendations to address the threat of aquatic invasive species by strengthening Alberta's prevention and early detection efforts. An annual watercraft pass is one of those recommendations and why we were collecting feedback.

Alberta is currently free of zebra, quagga, and golden mussels, but reports are increasing across Canada and the United States. Watercrafts are the main mode of overland transportation and introduction of invasive mussels, among other invasive species.
