Overview
The Government of Alberta is engaging with industry stakeholders, tourism associations, and Alberta’s agricultural sector on the development of an Alberta Whisky Act. This new legislation would establish input requirements and production standards for a liquor product to be labelled as ‘Alberta Whisky’.
To inform the development of legislation, stakeholders will be engaged on the required criteria that a whisky product must meet to be labelled as ‘Alberta Whisky’, as well as other program implementation details. Discussions on policy and program issues include:
- production standards and input requirements: minimum aging periods, mash ingredient composition, distillation practices, use of additives and distillation location
- certification and oversight: how a potential certification or quality assurance system might work, and who would oversee it
- marketing and promotion: opportunities to use legislation to bolster tourism, exports, and consumer awareness of Alberta-made whisky
- alignment with trade agreements: ensuring consistency with international trade obligations and supporting access to foreign markets

This is a targeted stakeholder engagement.
Outcomes
The legislation would also support the long-term growth and competitiveness of Alberta’s whisky sector by providing clear standards for product labelling, aging, geographic indicators and marketing, while enabling innovation and access to international markets.
