Description: Alberta Emergency Alert- Ice Jam Watch Update for The Peace River at the Town of Peace River. Updated

An Ice Jam Watch remains in effect for the Peace River at the Town of Peace River. The collapse of the newly formed ice cover(also called a secondary consolidation) on the Peace River at the Town of Peace River has resulted in the formation of an ice jam and high water levels on the river. The potential exists for sudden changes in river levels upstream and downstream.

Water levels remain approximately 1.0 m higher than the targeted freeze-up elevation but have been falling slowly since January 29. Although water levels have fallen, warm temperatures forecast for later this week have the potential to reduce the ice cover stability in the Town of Peace River. Additional ice cover collapses are possible, and water levels are being monitored closely. The ice front was located about 10.0 km upstream of the Hwy. 2 bridge in the morning of February 2.
