History:

Description: Alberta Emergency Alert- Ice Jam Watch Alert for The Peace River at the Town of Peace River. Updated

An Ice Jam Watch remains in effect for the Peace River at the Town of Peace River. The collapse of the newly formed ice cover(also called a secondary consolidation) on the Peace River at the Town of Peace River has resulted in the formation of an ice jam and high water levels on the river. The potential exists for sudden changes in river levels upstream and downstream.

Although water levels are currently higher than the targeted freeze-up elevation, they remain relatively unchanged at 3 m below the top of the dykes in Town. Water levels are being monitored closely and updates will be issued as necessary. The ice front was located about 9.4 km upstream of the Hwy. 2 bridge on the morning of January 28.

Action to take:

  • Be cautious of the rising water levels and take appropriate precautionary measures.
