Description: Alberta Emergency Alert- Ice Jam Watch Update for The Peace River at the Town of Peace River. Updated
An Ice Jam Watch remains in effect for the Peace River at the Town of Peace River. The collapse of the newly formed ice cover(also called a secondary consolidation) on the Peace River at the Town of Peace River has resulted in the formation of an ice jam and high water levels on the river. The potential exists for sudden changes in river levels upstream and downstream.
Water levels are remain approximately 1.5 m higher than the targeted freeze-up elevation but are falling slowly. Due to warm temperatures, the ice cover remains unstable and the possibility of further ice cover collapses exists. Water levels are being monitored closely and updates will be issued as necessary. The ice front was located about 10.0 km upstream of the Hwy. 2 bridge in the afternoon of January 29.
