The incident under investigation happened on Sept. 17, 2026. Shortly after 11:30 p.m., Whitecourt RCMP officers went to a local hotel in response to a call about a man who was possibly intoxicated.

When police arrived, they found a man unconscious in the hallway. Officers found out the 47-year-old man was a long-term resident of the hotel, and gained entry to his suite with help from staff. Police brought the man into the suite, left him alone inside and departed the hotel.

Within an hour of police leaving, the man's wife returned to the hotel, found him in medical distress and called 911. Paramedics and firefighters attempted life-saving measures, but he died at the scene.
