On July 30, shortly before 2 a.m., Calgary Police Service officers went to a home in the 1000 block of Bridlemeadows Manor S.W. after someone reported that a man was firing a bow and arrow in a backyard. Police had been called to the same home earlier that night.
Police learned that the man, 36, was not allowed to be at the home or possess weapons under the conditions of his release. Despite those conditions, the man was inside the home when police arrived.
Officers spoke with him and repeatedly asked him to come outside without any weapons.
About an hour later, the man left the residence through the front door carrying a bow and arrow and moved toward officers positioned in the driveway. In the moments that followed, officers responded by releasing a police service dog and firing a 40-mm less-lethal impact weapon and a service pistol in close succession.
After firing the weapons, officers immediately administered first aid. Paramedics took him to hospital in critical condition. His condition was later upgraded to stable.
The Police Review Commission directed ASIRT to investigate the incident as a Level 1 matter. Under the Police Act, Level 1 matters generally include incidents involving serious injury or death, or serious or sensitive allegations about an officer’s actions.
The Calgary Police Service has separately pursued criminal charges against the 36-year-old man in connection to the events leading up to the shooting.
The information in this release reflects what ASIRT investigators know at this early stage and what they can share while maintaining the integrity of the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information is available for release at this time.
