From July 24 to October 26, Albertans will have the opportunity to provide input on the draft Caribou Mountains and Red Earth sub-regional plans through an online survey, webinars and targeted engagement with specific organizations. Public feedback will help inform the development of the final plans and ensure they reflect the priorities and values of Albertans.

Land-use planning plays a critical role in supporting a wide range of activities across Alberta, including economic development, recreation, conservation, and the exercise of Treaty rights and traditional land uses. By seeking input from those who live and work in these regions, Alberta’s government is helping ensure the plans are practical and responsive to local perspectives.

Alberta’s government will continue working with Indigenous communities and organizations, local governments, industry and other interested parties throughout the finalization and implementation of the plans.

  • The Caribou Mountains sub-region includes 36,700 square kilometres in northern Alberta, located north of High Level and Fort Vermillion.
  • The Red Earth sub-region included more than 61,306 square kilometres located in northern Alberta and encompasses boreal forests, wetlands, river systems and agricultural land south of Peace River.
  • Alberta continues to deliver on sub-regional plans, providing direction and guidance on Crown land.
    • The Upper Smoky Sub-Regional Plan came into force January 1, and the wildfire mitigation plan was released by Forestry and Parks earlier this month.
    • Engagement for the South Athabasca Sub-Regional Plan closed on April 9, and feedback is being considered.
    • Preliminary engagement for the Ghost Kananaskis Sub-regional Plan closed June 5, and is being considered as a draft plan is being developed for further engagement with Albertans.
