Alberta government one card

The new cards have enhanced security features and a modern design that celebrates Alberta’s landscape and identity. The integration of personal health numbers on the cards will improve convenience for Albertans by eliminating the need to carry a separate paper health card.

A safe and secure card that reflects a strong Alberta

Both the driver’s licence and ID card incorporate an Alberta flag-inspired theme, with imagery that reflects the province’s landscape and identity. The design features the Three Sisters mountain range near Canmore, along with Alberta’s provincial animal and fish, the bighorn sheep and the bull trout.

The cards also include state-of-the-art security features that make them more secure and reliable, helping to protect Albertans against fraud.

What to bring to a registry agent

When visiting a registry agent to apply for or renew a driver’s licence or ID card, eligible Albertans should bring:

  • valid identification
  • proof of legal entitlement to be in Canada (such as a Canadian birth certificate, Canadian Passport, NEXUS card and Permanent Residency card)
  • Alberta health card – to revalidate eligibility for Alberta’s Health Care Insurance Plan

Registry agents will verify eligibility for Alberta health care insurance coverage, and confirm all information in your health insurance account is current and correct. Once confirmed, the personal health number will be added to the card.

Citizenship marker

All Albertans will confirm their legal presence in person at a registry agent. When Canadian citizenship is confirmed, a “CAN” marker will be added to the top right corner of the card.

Eligible non-citizens can still obtain a driver’s licence or ID card.

A one-time 60-day grace period may be available for those who need additional time to gather required documents but they will need to visit the registry agent first, to make that determination. Should an Albertan receive a 60-day grace period by a registry agent to obtain additional documentation, they will be provided with a temporary driver’s licence or identification card that would expire 60 days after being issued.
