“During Métis Week, we honour the enduring contributions, culture and resilience of Métis people in Alberta and across Canada. This week provides an opportunity for everyone to learn more about Métis traditions, language, history and leadership, and to acknowledge the significant impact Métis communities have had in shaping the province.

“Long before Alberta joined Confederation, Métis people drove commerce and innovation, transporting goods across the prairies in Red River Carts while establishing settlements along fur trade routes. Today, their rich traditions, entrepreneurial spirit and deep connection to the land continue to enhance the cultural and economic landscape in Alberta.

“On Nov. 16, we also recognize the life and legacy of Louis Riel, who was sentenced to death on this day in 1885 for defending the interests and future of the Métis people. Annual tributes continue to be held in his honour.

“This week, I encourage all individuals living in Alberta to engage with Métis communities across the province, as they share their history, music and vibrant traditions. Take the time to connect with local Métis organizations and reflect on the important role Métis people have played – and continue to play – in building a strong and inclusive province.

“Let us all stand in recognition of Métis Week with pride, respect and a renewed commitment to supporting reconciliation.”
