“Each October, we recognize the selfless contributions that foster and kinship caregivers make across the province. These incredible individuals help make a meaningful, long-lasting impact in the lives of so many children and youth by opening their hearts and homes.

“Alberta is home to more than 2,100 kinship caregivers and 1,400 foster caregivers who are providing a safe and loving environment to help children and youth stay as closely connected as possible to their culture and community.

“That’s why we’re continuing to make targeted investments so caregivers can focus on what they do best: providing children and youth with a strong foundation for their futures. In total, we’re providing more than $11 million to enhance supports for caregivers over the next three years, which includes funding for counselling sessions and the refer-a-foster caregiver program for families who may be interested in becoming a foster caregiver. This investment also includes more than $3 million this year to increase caregiver rates to assist with the costs of raising a child or youth in their care.

“Caregiving is no small task. It requires your time, your strength, your patience, and above all, your unwavering compassion. That’s why we’re always looking for more caregivers, just like you. If you’re interested in opening your heart and your home, I encourage you to contact [email protected] for more information.

“This Foster and Kinship Caregiver Month and every day, we will continue supporting you as you work to help give the children and youth in your care a good foundation for their future.

“The support, safety and care you provide is not only making a difference in the lives of young people today, but for generations to come.”
