“Sept. 21 marks Agricultural Societies Day in Alberta, a chance to recognize and appreciate the hard work ag societies and their volunteers do, and the positive difference they make in our communities.
“Alberta is home to 292 agricultural societies, the most in Canada. Ag societies own or operate more than 1,000 different types of facilities and host more than 40,000 activities and events in our province every year.
“These non-profit organizations are the backbone of many rural communities and have been for many decades. In Alberta, 191 ag societies are 50 years or older and 27 of these are more than 100 years old.
“From rodeos and bench shows to educational programs and conferences, agricultural societies help their communities thrive. Ag societies also support major community facilities across Alberta, including community halls, rodeo grounds and campgrounds.
“Our government is proud to continue its support through the Agricultural Societies Infrastructure Revitalization Program, which provided $7.5 million in total grants for 106 projects over the last three years. Through this program, we have helped improve and repair commercial kitchens, roofing, heating, and ventilation in ice rinks, horse riding arenas and more. That’s on top of the Agricultural Societies Grant Program, which provides $11.5 million in stable operational funding every year.
“On Sunday, let’s appreciate ag societies and the volunteers who dedicate time in their communities, making them excellent places to live, work and raise a family. On behalf of all Albertans, I extend a sincere thank you to all of our ag societies and their thousands of volunteers for improving our agriculture sector and helping rural communities flourish.”
