The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit of the Alberta Sheriffs obtained a court order against the property owner of 55319 Highway 28A in Sturgeon County. The property will be closed for 43 days, beginning on Sept. 3 at noon. Certain individuals are banned from visiting the property for three years.

The community safety order, obtained in the Court of King’s Bench, bars all people from the property until the closure period ends on Oct. 16. The property will be boarded up and all the locks will be changed. SCAN members will continue to monitor the property for activity while their investigation remains ongoing. Community safety order conditions remain in effect until Aug. 22, 2028.

“Closures like this send a clear message to drug dealers: you’re not welcome anywhere in Alberta. Full stop! I want to thank the northern SCAN unit, the Edmonton Police Service and the RCMP for their close collaboration on this closure. All Albertans deserve security and peace of mind at home, free from disruption and chaos that leaves them and their property vulnerable. Residents should report any suspicious activity they observe in their area.”

Mike Ellis, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services

“Collaboration between agencies drives successful resolutions to these files. Thanks to the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP, whose partnership on this investigation has been instrumental in helping address long-standing problems at this property. Throughout the province, SCAN units remain committed to protecting the safety and security of Albertans.”

Andrew Albers, inspector, SCAN

The Alberta Sheriffs work with other law enforcement agencies to shut down properties being used for illegal activities. The SCAN unit operates under the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, which uses legal sanctions and court orders to hold owners accountable for illegal activity happening on their property.

Since its inception in 2008, Alberta’s SCAN unit has investigated more than 10,000 properties and has issued more than 135 community safety orders. Most complaints are resolved by working with owners to stop the illegal activity on their property.

Quick facts

  • The northern SCAN unit began receiving complaints about suspicious activity at this property in spring 2024.
  • In July 2024, SCAN worked with the property owner and RCMP to evict several individuals living at the property. Complainants reported that activity at the property had slowed, and the investigation was closed.
  • Complaints of suspected drug and criminal activity reemerged in the spring of 2025, which led to the file being reopened.
