The evidence gathered during ASIRT’s investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed. As required by the Police Act, the investigation was forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) to determine whether the evidence met the standard for prosecution.
Following a review of the investigation and having been advised that the ACPS was of the opinion that the evidence met their standard for prosecution, ASIRT Executive Director Michael Ewenson determined that the involved officers should be charged. On April 7, 2025, Const. Debra-Ann Wash and Const. Dorian Tooze were charged with operating a conveyance in a manner that was dangerous to the public under Sec. 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code. They were released on an appearance notice and are scheduled for first appearance on May 21 in the Stony Plain Court of Justice.
As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.
ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
