“On this day, we honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit plus (MMIWG2S+) peoples and extend our deepest respects to their family, loved ones and communities.
“We thank Indigenous Peoples, communities and groups for your resiliency, hard work and commitment to making the voices of your loved ones known. We also grieve with you and hear your calls to action.
“We are working with Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit plus (2S+) people to build a future where they live safe and secure lives.
“This work includes launching the Premier’s Council on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2S+ people, which ensures Indigenous voices are heard in government decision-making. As we continue these efforts, we are using the Alberta Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Roadmap to guide our steps forward.
“Our steps include launching the Community Support Fund, a new $4-million annual grant program that was developed to fund Indigenous-led, community-based initiatives that increase the safety and economic security of Indigenous women, girls and 2S+ people.
“I thank the dedicated organizers of Sisters in Spirit Day events across Alberta for keeping the memories of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2S+ people in our hearts. Your advocacy inspires us to continue our work towards a safer future.
“I also invite all Albertans to honour Indigenous women, girls and 2S+ people, their families and loved ones with a moment of silence or by attending an event. If you suspect someone is in danger, please reach out and read about family violence supports available in Alberta. By taking a stand, we can all help stop the violence.”
