At approximately 6 a.m., CPS received a complaint from a resident who had been confronted by a man armed with a sledgehammer in the 1100 block of 39 Street SE. The resident fled the property and was confronted again in the street by the man with the sledgehammer. The man began to damage a vehicle parked on the street and was still doing so when police arrived.

At 6:05 a.m., the first officer arrived on scene and activated their body-worn camera. A second officer arrived shortly after. Police deployed a conducted energy weapon and OC spray, however, the man held onto the sledgehammer. One of the officers discharged their firearm, striking the man once in the arm. First aid was provided at the scene and the man was transported to hospital shortly after, where he was treated for a gunshot wound.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the officer-involved shooting. No additional information will be released.

As part of its ongoing investigation, ASIRT is continuing efforts to identify people who may have witnessed aspects of the confrontation between the man and police. ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and/or may have video to contact investigators at 403-592-4306.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
