“Aug. 14-20 is Local Food Week, an opportunity to celebrate the Alberta producers and processors who make and grow nutritious food for families around the globe.

“Local Food Week kicks off with Open Farm Days Aug. 13-14, where farms open their gates to their neighbours. I encourage all Albertans to take this opportunity to have a closer look at how our food is produced and get to know the people who produce it.

“During Open Farm Days, some of Alberta's most talented chefs will also prepare a series of memorable farm-to-table culinary events in rural communities around the province using Alberta products and ingredients.

“Local Food Week and Open Farm Days are great opportunities to enjoy some delicious local food and learn more about where our food comes from. You can go local by:

  • Downloading the Farmers’ Market app and visiting an Alberta Approved Farmers' Market in your area.
  • Picking your own fresh fruit and vegetables at a u-pick farm.
  • Planning your ultimate local food experience at Open Farm Days.
  • Promoting and following the local food conversation to see events, activities and celebrations by using #ABLocalFood.

“There are many ways to support local food production and processing in our province. I encourage all Albertans to look for local food products this week and throughout the year.”
