At 1:05 a.m., officers found the man again, and a brief struggle occurred. He was then arrested for outstanding warrants and being intoxicated in public. Police transported him to the CPS Arrest Processing Section (APS).

At approximately 1:30 a.m., while he was processing the man at APS, an officer used force on the male, bringing him to the ground. The man appeared to be injured, and was assessed by APS medics who determined that he needed to go to the hospital. Officers transported him to the hospital for assessment there. At 11:30 a.m., doctors cleared the man and he was returned to APS.

At approximately 11 p.m., the man had a seizure while alone in a cell. He was then returned to the hospital and admitted to intensive care.

On March 22, the man left the hospital.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the use of force. No additional information will be released.

As part of its ongoing investigation, ASIRT is continuing efforts to identify people who may have witnessed aspects of the confrontation between the man and police. ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and/or may have video to contact investigators at 403-592-4306.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
