Through the Active Communities Initiative, Alberta’s government is supporting 20 sport and recreation infrastructure projects across the province. From St. Paul and Innisfail to Taber and Chestermere, these investments will help Albertans stay active, connected and healthy, while supporting local economic growth and community development.
Alberta’s growing communities need new and revitalized facilities to support kids sports and active lifestyles. The expansion and creation of these facilities will strengthen local economies as they stimulate more than $46 million in estimated economic activity and create both short-term and long-term employment opportunities across the province.

The Active Communities Initiative is Alberta's first grant program dedicated exclusively to sport and recreation infrastructure. The funding is open to eligible community groups, non-profit organizations and societies, including First Nations and Metis Settlements, to build or enhance active spaces that support sport and recreational opportunities for their communities.

One of the 20 projects receiving funding is the Meadowlark Park Green Space Revitalization project, which will include upgrades to a pump track, bike skills park, outdoor workout circuit and connecting pathways, creating a free and accessible recreation hub for residents of all ages and abilities. The Chestermere Boxing Club also received funding for a new multi-use boxing and fitness facility. This project will expand access to year-round sport and recreation programming for all ages while supporting participation in boxing, fitness and community sport.

Applications for the 2027 Active Communities Initiative will open in the spring of 2027.
