Officers went to a residence in south Calgary’s Legacy neighbourhood and contained the area while police communicators remained in contact with the woman for approximately 45 minutes. During those conversations, she made statements suggesting she was armed and threatened officers if they approached.
Several officers remained outside the home.
Shortly after 2 a.m., the woman stepped out of the house. Officers yelled repeated commands to “drop the gun.” In a confrontation that quickly followed, officers fired multiple rounds from a less-lethal projectile launcher and a round from a rifle.
The woman fell to the ground. Paramedics immediately provided first aid. At the same time, first responders smelled leaking natural gas and evacuated nearby homes.
Investigators recovered an air-powered pistol from the scene. The information in this release reflects what ASIRT investigators know at this early stage and what they can share while maintaining the integrity of the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.
