A Calgary home linked to ongoing drug activity has been ordered closed following a Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit investigation that began in August 2025 after community complaints. During the investigation, SCAN members observed steady foot traffic at all hours, individuals using drugs in the community and appearing heavily intoxicated, and activity consistent with drug trafficking. In September 2025, a Calgary Police Service investigation led to the seizure of weapons, drugs and drug paraphernalia from the residence. The property was also associated with assaults, thefts and other criminal activity.

Despite issuing a warning letter to the property owner, SCAN continued to receive and substantiate public complaints regarding drug activity. On May 4, SCAN officers obtained a Community Safety Order from the Court of King’s Bench to close the property at 1523 51 Street SE for 90 days. Beginning at 10 a.m. on May 6, the property was required to be vacated and secured, until the end of the closure period on August 4, with conditions remaining in place until August 4, 2028. SCAN will continue to monitor the property through the closure period.

“Albertans deserve to feel safe in their homes and neighbourhoods. When property owners allow illegal activity that puts communities at risk, we will take action. I commend the Alberta Sheriffs SCAN unit and the Calgary Police Service for their persistence in addressing this problem property and for sending a clear message that drug-related crime and the harm it causes will not be tolerated. Alberta’s government will continue to do whatever it takes to keep people safe.”

Mike Ellis, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services

“This outcome reflects months of careful investigation, surveillance and engagement by our Sheriff SCAN members. Our first priority is always to work with property owners to stop illegal activity and resolve issues voluntarily. When that doesn’t happen, we will use the authorities available under the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act to take decisive action and protect public safety.”

Christopher Fitzsimmons, acting inspector, SCAN

“This investigation highlights the real value of strong partnerships in addressing complex community safety issues. When agencies work together, we are better able to disrupt criminal activity, maintain safe neighbourhoods and reinforce public confidence. We are committed to continuing to work with all our public safety partners, municipally and provincially, to address crime in our city.”

Jason Walker, inspector, District 4, Calgary Police Service

The Alberta Sheriffs work with other law enforcement agencies to shut down properties being used for illegal activities. The SCAN unit operates under the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, which uses legal sanctions and court orders to hold owners accountable for illegal activity happening on their property.

Quick facts

  • The property is in a residential neighbourhood in southeast Calgary, close to many businesses.
