On March 21, 2026, a hotel employee called 911 to report a man who appeared to be intoxicated had refused to leave the lobby, despite being asked and offered assistance.

Police officers arrived at the hotel, near 100 Ave. and 104 Street N.W., shortly before 3 a.m. and found the man inside. When the man refused officers’ order to leave, they arrested him for trespassing.

During the arrest, the man resisted being handcuffed and continued to do so after being brought to the ground. An officer deployed a conducted energy weapon (CEW), after which officers gained control of the man. He was then handcuffed and taken outside.

After the arrest, the man said his arm was hurting. Paramedics were called, and he was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital to be checked by doctors. The extent of the man’s injuries is not yet known to ASIRT.

The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate this incident as a Level 1 matter. Under the Police Act, this includes cases involving serious injury or death, or serious or sensitive concerns about an officer’s actions.

The information provided reflects what investigators know at this early stage. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.

ASIRT is part of the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency. ASIRT investigates serious incidents involving police across Alberta, including those that result in serious injury or death, as well as potential criminal offences.
