On Jan. 6, 2026 at about 3 p.m., Grande Prairie Rural RCMP responded to a report of someone driving erratically in an area north of the city. An officer located the suspect vehicle in a ditch, where it had become stuck.

When the officer approached the vehicle to speak with the driver, the man immediately attacked the officer with a knife. The officer shot the man with a service pistol. When the man did not drop the knife, the officer fired a conducted energy weapon, striking the man.

Additional RCMP members arrived shortly thereafter and took the man into custody. He was taken to hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound and later released.

The RCMP officer received medical treatment for a stab wound. The officer’s injury wasn’t considered life-threatening -and he was also released from hospital.
