On Dec. 31, 2023, there was a fatal shooting by a WPS officer. The Manitoba Investigations Unit led the investigation until a potential conflict of interest was noted.
On Jan. 9, 2024, under an agreement with the Government of Manitoba, ASIRT was directed to investigate the WPS officer-involved shooting.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
