For the first time, Alberta will host the U18 Women’s Tackle National Championship, bringing the top under-18 female football players from across Canada to Calgary. The nine-day event will showcase the skill and dedication of Canada’s most talented female football players and highlight the province’s position as a premier destination for major sporting events while supporting local athletic talent.
Alberta’s government provided $200,000 in funding through the Major Sport Event grant program to support the planning, staging and delivery of this competition. This grant program provides financial assistance to support organizations in planning and hosting national and international sporting events in Alberta. The competition is expected to draw about 450 visitors and is projected to bring in $1.6 million for the local economy, driven by spending on food, lodging, retail and transportation by athletes, fans and their supporters.
“Our government is proud to support the up-and-coming young athletes at the U18 Women’s Tackle National Championship. We are looking forward to hosting them in Calgary, a city with world-class facilities and known for its dedication to sport. These events showcase our hospitality, competitiveness and help put Alberta on the map.”
Now in its fourth year, the championship continues to grow in profile and participation with eight teams, representing Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick and the National Indigenous Team competing for the national title. Having captured the first two titles, Alberta is eager to reclaim the top spot in 2025 on home turf.
“Football Alberta is thrilled to host the Football Canada U18 Female Tackle National Championship. Tackle football for females is one the quickest-growing sports in the nation, especially in Alberta, and we are proud to not only show that off but also show off our amazing province to the other provincial teams. Calgary is a perfect host for this great event.”
