At approximately 7:27 p.m., the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) received 911 calls reporting that someone had been stabbed outside a bar in Edmonton’s west end. The suspect left the scene in a vehicle prior to police arriving.
As police were responding to the bar location, another 911 call was received at approximately 7:32 p.m., indicating that the suspect vehicle was being followed by a witness to the stabbing, in the area of Stony Plain Road and 178 Street. At one point, the suspect vehicle attempted to make contact with the vehicle following it.
At approximately 7:44 p.m., officers from the EPS West Division located the suspect vehicle in the area of 98A Avenue, east of 178 Street, with one male occupant. A police vehicle made contact with the suspect vehicle, causing it to come to a stop. An officer then engaged the driver, which resulted in that officer firing their service pistol at the driver, causing him non-life threatening injuries.
The driver was taken to hospital for treatment in stable condition. None of the involved officers were injured, nor were any members of the public.
ASIRT’s investigation will examine use of force by the officer. No additional information will be released.
As part of its ongoing investigation, ASIRT is continuing efforts to identify people who may have witnessed aspects of the confrontation between the man and police. ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and/or may have video, to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.
