At approximately 5:55 p.m. on Jan. 23, two Edmonton Police Service officers responded to a domestic dispute at a residence in the Callingwood neighbourhood in Edmonton (64 Avenue NW and 172 Street NW). The officers were responding to a report of a family disturbance and threats complaint involving a 19-year-old female and a 12-year-old female.
Inside the residence, the officers were confronted by a 19-year-old female in possession of a knife. During the confrontation, a conductive energy weapon was deployed, and a police firearm was discharged, striking the 19-year-old female. The 19-year-old received first aid at the scene before being transported to hospital shortly afterward, where she is recovering from serious injury. No one else was injured during the confrontation.
A knife located at the scene has been seized.
The Edmonton Police Service continues to investigate the original report of disturbance and threats complaint.
ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by the officers. No additional information will be released at this time.
