ASIRT’s investigation also uncovered evidence linking a civilian to the officer’s actions. Following a review of the investigation and having been advised of the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service’s (ACPS) opinion that the evidence met their test for prosecution, ASIRT executive director Michael Ewenson determined that the two individuals should be charged.
On Jan. 31, Nadia Kelm, a traffic ticket agent in Edmonton, and now-retired EPS officer Collin Smart were arrested and charged in relation to 19 separate occurrences in which arrest reports and the execution of warrants were falsified. As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released. The first court appearance for both is March 5.
ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
